I've used their OS. It's good - idiot proof to install, rock solid, and it comes with as many goodies as Windows. (As in, it comes with text editors, a web browser, email clients, games, and other stuff that makes you feel like your machine can do stuff.)
Here's my take on the IPO:

1. Red Hat needs cash to advance the state of Linux. They paid for most of the development of GNOME, the GUI layer that makes Linux palatable to people who prefer such things. Raising cash lets them continue to be in the forefront of Linux development, and it you are in the head of the pack, then you don't need to own the copyright. What is the source for DOS worth today? What is Word 6 worth? Being on the leading edge is more important than owning stuff in this new world of Software.

2. The idiot IT people that force their companies to standardize on Internet Explorer despite the fact that doing so opens their network up to all sorts of security holes will like buying software from a publically traded company. THE ACT OF IPOing WILL MAKE RED HAT A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE IN COMPANIES THAT ONLY WANT TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FROM "real" COMPANIES.

my $0.02,
---matt
