Yes, test stocks are great, but be careful. Some brokers charge commissions for executions on the test stocks. I was charged by MBT for executions done on one of them, it cost me $80.00. I was also told that it would affect my daily buying power.
Castle does not charge. I'm not sure about the others. It seems to me that it should be free to allow us to do exactly what you mention here. Test and learn the system.

The test stocks are also not as "real" as you would like them to be. SNET is usually just ignored by the MM's. I don't think I have ever had an order executed via SNET/MM. But it is great to get the feel of SOES and ISLD and the various ECN's.
