"New study says IE has more than 50 percent of the market."

That's an interesting study since it was done via interviews and purports to show what's installed on machines, but it seems to underestimate IE's share of actual users.

Look, for instance, at the global statistics at thecounter.com. This outfit provides a counter for web pages. It will miss hits on big corporate sites, but since it counts around 200 million hits per month to a wide variety of small sites, it gives a good example of what the average surfer is using (which might be different from what the user would tell an interviewer).

IE has a consistent penetration of about 70% on the global stats.

That might be skewed to the high side by improperly made that work only with IE, but even on a site I manage that's carefully browser-agnostic, IE comes it at 60% each month.
