I remembered Fred's telling the story because it is exactly the kind of thing that sticks in one's mind forever. Robert E. Lee as a boy listened to his father ("Light Horse Harry") tell war stories about the Revolutionary War (Washington called Harry his bravest leader) and those stories about Washington and heroes of the war helped form R. E. Lee's character -- as perfect man as ever walked the earth in my opinion. Of course, R.E. Lee later married George Washington's granddaughter (by adoption) Ann Carter Custis. They lived in George Washington Custis (the "Child of Mount Vernon") house -- Arlington and owned Washington's camp furniture. His boys' characters were formed by the ghosts that surrounded Lee.
