At the boys' school, it was just NECCESSARY to be a Scout. Everyone did it. I am NOT a joiner. I hate groups, I hate group projects, I was a miserable Girl Scout who borrowed someone else's badges to wear and look impressive when she had her picture taken . But I AM a dedicated mother so I enrolled the boys in Tiger Cubs and then Cub Scouts. I was even an Assistant Den Mother. CW made it to the Circle or Bar of Light(??I forget)Ammo never got past Tiger. They hated it. The whole idea of it- all that enforced camaraderie, the vicious competition for badges. My husband hated the campouts with dads who yelled and nipped from flasks. Their soap box derby cars never won. We just are NOT very productive members of a social group. A couple of CW's friends are now Eagle Scouts. I asked the boys if they were sorry they had quit.
CW said, "No, but I'm mad you let me quit piano lessons."
Ammo said, "I don't remember ever being one."

I am relieved to know my sons still have a chance to succeed in life without badges. Although they take labels off things that itch them.
