VerticalNet Enables Business-to-Business Marketplace for the State of Maryland
MarylandB2B.com First of its Kind for Business and Economic Development
HORSHAM, PA /ROCKVILLE, MD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1999-- Maryland Information Technology Center (MITC) in conjunction with VerticalNet, Inc. (Nasdaq:VERT - news), the Internet's premiere marketplace of business-to-business vertical communities of commerce, announced today plans for a new Web community, MarylandB2B.com. This new community will assist Maryland-based companies and partners to better compete in the emerging global marketplace by providing access to a wide range of contacts, content, and commerce services on VerticalNet. Maryland is the first state to use the vertical market capability of VerticalNet for business and economic development.
VerticalNet (www.verticalnet.com) currently owns and operates 39 individual vertical trade communities in eight industry groups, including process, environmental, communications, food and packaging, healthcare, sciences, advanced technologies and services.
Maryland Information Technology Center (MITC) was established more than eight years ago as a 501(c)(3) organization to help bring the benefits of new technologies such as the Internet and e-commerce to all of Maryland's constituents: business, government agencies, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and each and every citizen. ''MITC's role is that of facilitator and expeditor to provide 'fast track' access to new technology,'' said John Murdock, president of MITC.
''We are delighted with this alliance between MITC and VerticalNet,'' said Major Riddick, Governor Parris Glendening's Chief of Staff. ''MarylandB2B.com will provide added capability to Maryland as the Digital Port State(TM) to insure that many of its key businesses get an opportunity to compete effectively in the global marketplace.''
''As a Maryland native and resident, nothing gives me more personal and professional pride than to have VerticalNet collaborate with my home state in this key initiative,'' said Mark Walsh, president and CEO of VerticalNet. ''Maryland's presence on the Net, using our platform, will advance the goals of the Governor and MITC and will be a model that other states can follow.''
