By old-line progressives I had in mind people such as the late lamented Erwin Knoll and some of the folks at Progressive magazine. Populists in the tradition of William Jennings Bryan - leftist populists I guess. It seems to me there should be a natural alliance there. However, when I broach the subject of a Pat Buchanan/Jerry Brown alliance with friends, the idea is not well received. I guess there is too much intransigence in both camps.
As for the neocons being perceived as interlopers, I do not believe it so much a matter of what beliefs or philosophy one formerly may have held, but what does one believe now? There are numerous paleocons who changed beliefs over time. I think what paleocons perceive is that there are two camps arguing over how best to run the managerial state, the neocons and the leftists. Both camps seem to have accepted the New Deal and all its trappings.
I agree that paleocons and libertarians would have a hard time reconciling, considering how the left-libertarians are driving their agenda, but there is that strain of thought coined by Lew Rockwell as "paleolibertarianism" still lurking out there, so perhaps over time things will change.
