Active Voice Begins Shipping Unified Messaging for Cisco CallManager(TM): Unity(TM) Delivers Microsoft(R) NT(R)- and Exchange(R)-Based Unified Messaging PR Newswire - June 08, 1999 08:15 Jump to first matched term
SEATTLE, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Active Voice Corporation (Nasdaq: ACVC), a world leader in unified messaging and computer telephony software solutions, today announced commercial availability of its Unity 2.0 unified messaging server for Cisco Communications Network's (CCN) CallManager 2.2.
"The response to our early demonstrations of Unity support for CCN was overwhelming, so we are excited to begin shipping this commercial product," emphasizes Frank J. Costa, Active Voice's CEO and president. "Interest in Unity from larger Exchange customers was already high, but since many of these customers are also evaluating CCN, native support for the combined products is proving irresistible. With Unity, enterprise customers can leverage the proven reliability and scalability of Exchange and get a convergence-ready product that works with their existing telephone systems and CCN. It's great investment protection."
"This is another clear benefit from Active Voice's long-term commitment to build open products using Microsoft platforms and technologies," reports Eric Lockard, general manager of Microsoft's Exchange product group. "Active Voice has worked closely with the Exchange team for many years to deliver fully unified messaging. They have worked closely with the TAPI team to deliver convergence-ready applications. They are well positioned to take maximum advantage of our continuing platform improvements with Platinum and beyond."
Unity delivers fully unified messaging for the Microsoft Exchange Server. Through Exchange, Unity provides a single point of administration for e-mail, voice mail, and fax mail user accounts, address and distribution lists, and network configuration. When compared to duplicated administration tasks required by integrated messaging systems, Unity saves an estimated $50-$75 per incident.
Cisco CallManager is a software-only application for enterprise business communications that provides high-quality voice telephony over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. Unity supports direct IP connection to CCN through standard network hardware. This eliminates the specialty circuit voice hardware and dedicated IP-PSTN gateway ports used to connect conventional voice messaging systems to CCN. Estimated customer savings are $700-$1,000 per port depending on system configuration.
"Microsoft listened to our needs and made changes to support fully unified messaging," adds Kevin L. Chestnut, Active Voice's CTO and vice president of advanced products and technology. "Exchange is the only messaging platform that supports our real-time messaging requirements for large, mission-critical communications systems. Combine this with enterprise scalability, replication, directory support, and a wealth of underlying Windows NT technologies that support convergence, and you can understand our commitment to Exchange. Today, we are testing Unity servers with a capacity of 120 circuit switch ports. As we move forward with Platinum, we are confident that we can deliver even more capacity for CCN and other packet switches."
