The future is desktop power rather than large expensive centralized iron with a bunch of un-upgradeable appliances hanging off it. The desktop model makes sense especially as desktop power is increasing as cost/seat is decreasing. The Net provides the medium to interconnect them to take advantage of distributed processing. Big iron will always have it's place but in a true "network computer model" any computer can provide the processing.
