Williams Communications Group passes the word on a nationwide
fiber-optic network, built partially along the natural gas pipelines of its
parent, The Williams Companies. Williams Communications offers telecom
providers voice, data, Internet, and video transmission services on its
packet-switched 20,000-mile network, which is being expanded to 32,000
miles. Williams Communications Solutions (30%-owned by Nortel
Networks) supplies telecom equipment to businesses, and Williams
Network Applications distributes multimedia content. SBC
Communications has agreed to buy up to 10% of the company, or $500
million worth, whichever is less. The Williams Companies will maintain a
controlling stake after the planned IPO.
