I think it would be a good idea to look at the nettiquette document. I recommend this for any newbie. Spamming involves indescriminately sending advertisements to a wide number of groups, like a shotgun approach. There is even programs available that will help you do this. One can cover alot of groups this way: Usenet groups, e-mail lists, user e-mail mailboxes, and so forth. Usually the adavertisement is sent multiple times this way, so each target will end up seeing mulltiple copies of the same advertisement, This does not necissarily need to involve advertising, but this is the approach commonly used by advertisers on the net.

In Bill's case, he must of posted several advertisements to his thread which caused someone to complain to the webmaster. Technically, this is not spamming, but it evidently had the same effect for some individuals on the thread. I think the rule here that was broken was not spamming, but the frequent posting of advertisements, or perhaps advertising itself is not allowed on SI. Some participating in the thread probably thought the thread was created by Bill to sell something under the guise of an informative thread on incorporating.

So on further thought, I am thinking that since this is different from spamming, netiquette does not necissarily apply here. So there would be no way tfor Bill o know that advertising was not allowed on any of these threads.
