Sorry, 49r, but gold was $35 up until Nixon changed the official exchange price in 1971. My horn may be green now, and I was just a kid at the time, but I do distinctly remember that fact and those times. It then was raised to $38 or $42 (or something like that) for a short while, and then Nixon "closed the gold window," the whole house of cards collapsed, and the free market took over.

Ah, the good old days of "Jimmuh" Carter's "20-20 vision," $800 an ounce gold, $40 oil and Bunky Hunt's silver charades.

I remember all this stuff because I used to collect coins, gold and silver ones to be exact. It was about that time that Americans were allowed to own bullion gold coins again, too. I must be getting older. Nostalgia has never been my thing, but your posting brings back memories.
