CNT Announces UltraNet Fibre Channel Switch; Adds Fibre Channel Capabilities and Provides Flexibility for Customers Designing SAN Architectures

MINNEAPOLIS, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Computer Network Technology (CNT(R)) (Nasdaq: CMNT) today announced the General Availability of the UltraNet(R) Fibre Channel Switch, which offers optimized price/performance for Fibre Channel switching. When combined with other CNT products, the switch allows the integration of Fibre Channel with diverse protocols such as SCSI, ATM, and T3/E3. With the addition of the new switch, CNT offers campus or remote storage area network (SAN) solutions that span Unix and NT servers, enabling companies to leverage their existing technical architecture when deploying open systems SANs and providing greater flexibility in their SAN infrastructure.

The switch, available in 8- and 16-port models, will enhance CNT's ability to provide open systems solutions for Fibre Channel-only configurations as well as mixed environments. Mixed environments may include SCSI-attached server and storage subsystems that need access to Fibre Channel components. The UltraNet Fibre Channel Switch has already been deployed at a CNT customer, a large financial institution that is running the switch as part of its open systems back-up/restore operations. Other SAN applications that will benefit from the addition of the new switch include: open server disk mirroring, server clustering, and shared storage of high-speed disk and tape.

The UltraNet Fibre Channel Switch is the result of an OEM agreement announced in January with Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. By adding the switch to the UltraNet family, CNT is providing customers with the latest technology for creating an open systems SAN. CNT and Brocade will continue their relationship for the further enhancement of SAN infrastructures that involve Fibre Channel singly or mixed with SCSI and mainframe platforms. CNT plans to leverage its mission-critical, enterprise networking expertise to bring additional WAN and network management capabilities to the product.

"CNT's mission is to offer solutions that support heterogeneous mission-critical, distributed operations," said Mark Knittel, vice president of marketing and business development at Computer Network Technology. "Our years of expertise in networking and wide area technology allow us to provide networking solutions for enterprise SANs, supporting both campus and wide-area connectivity. With this new switch, CNT provides the industry's broadest range of networking solutions, providing our customers with the choices and flexibility they need to successfully deploy their open systems SAN environments."

CNT's UltraNet Family

CNT has leveraged its high-speed and wide-area networking (WAN) expertise to provide superior networking infrastructure solutions for SAN environments. Its UltraNet solutions enable companies to create a SAN that moves and shares data between diverse systems components. The UltraNet family of products includes directors, gateways, switches, and multiplexers, all designed to allow data movement and sharing between disparate systems.
