I think you found the answer.

"We'll just sell some advertising that can't be erased, and load it on the drive to show up every time the computer starts up. The ads will rotate."

Then the DD stocks can be priced like the Internet stocks. They won't need earnings they just need market share regardless of how much it costs them to pay the OEM's.
