Police net 300 illegal Web cafes
ASSOCIATED PRESS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Police have closed 300 cafes in Shanghai for offering Internet services without licences.
The closures came during a crackdown last week, the Shanghai Star said.

It appeared to be part of efforts to silence potential sources of dissent around the 10th anniversary of the June 4 crackdown on pro-democracy protests.

Other cafes were fined for giving under-aged children access to computer games, the paper said.

Cafes with computer terminals that sell Internet access by the hour are common, but operate under increasingly strict rules. Operators must pass a police check and users are required to register.

Note: only Shanghai, China is a big place.

Think of it this way, if there are so many operating illigally then the demand is good.
