Everything in WDM or everything else known is at the upper limit of its capability. None of it is completely adequate and none of it is cheap. As the flow density rises so does all the various complexities. WDM must fail technologically if we wish to meet the demands inherent in ubiquitous cable modem.

In order to realize the goal of worldwide broadband service there has to be an alternative technology. The only known one to me is SR although land based wireless is coming on strong. Frank and I would love to be expressly bullish, but the company feels the core technology needs to be cloaked. You can't talk about what you don't know. The company apparently is teaching SR at UCSD and lecturing about it world wide, so they are putting it in the public domain. We don't get any information from there or anywhere else so we don't know to what extent the technology is being revealed.

We surmise that the reason is due to very difficult engineering problems related to practical implementation related to bandwidth scaling above 100 Gbps. The existing infrastructure is not accommodative and when the device is strapped on to a fiber network, modifications to the SR device make the technology unstable. It is as though the technology is too far ahead of our existing stone knives and bear skins. It is alien technology. We have a reasonable understanding of the concepts underlying SR, but we would have to have a much more disciplined knowledge to extrapolate whether SR will be the wave of the future.

We are both surprised that the private investors aren't coming to this thread and divulging anything they can. No law against that. They seem to think it is better to keep it all secret. We have had a few on this thread. Some of them are technologically sophisticated. They don't know what's going on either. Superquest is saying, "something must be happening here but we don't know what it is, do we, Mr. Jones".
