BellSouth Corp. Mulls Buying Qwest, Wall Street Journal Says

Bloomberg News
Jun 9 1999 1:30AM ET

New York, June 9 (Bloomberg) -- BellSouth Corp., the
fourth- largest U.S. regional phone company, is mulling a potential acquisition of Qwest Communications
International Inc., the fourth-largest U.S. long distance phone company, the Wall Street Journal Europe reported, without citing sources. The potential acquisition follows BellSouth's May 27 purchase of 10 percent of Qwest's stock, the Journal said. BellSouth, like all regional phone companies, is barred from owning more than 10 percent of any U.S. long-distance phone carrier, though all U.S. regional phone companies are trying to gain regulatory approval to enter the long-distance market, the newspaper said.

BellSouth said May 27 it paid about $3.5 billion for a 10 percent stake in Internet phone service provider Qwest for about $3.5 billion. (WSJ 6/9 5a www.wsj.com)
