I've been lurking in the background, reading all of the nonsense thrown around here. Thought you guys might actually want to see something pertinent to the topic at hand:

Logica advises that the UK can learn from the US Millennium experiences 21 May 1999
Logica has just released an analysis of independent verification and validation (IV&V) results that shows that programs in public sector organisations are the most likely to fail despite being 'fixed'.
The analysis, carried out by Matridgm in the US, was based on a number of US and UK clients across a range of market sectors. In total there was over 25 million lines of already Y2K converted code examined and validated in the process.
As would be expected the market sectors that started addressing the millennium issue earliest are furthest along with successful compliance. The financial sector, consisting of major banking and insurance companies, have adopted IV&V to drive their risk and their error rates as low as possible and are leading the way with percentage error rates of 9.4% and 4% respectively. Statistics for Public Sector organisations are 2 to 3 times higher.
Commenting on the conclusions of the analysis, Chris Harries, Logica's IV&V manager said, "It is generally accepted that the UK is 3 to 6 months behind the US in its state of readiness. Visibility of these statistics allow us to recover much of this gap - we can leverage the "trailing" of IV&V carried out in the US, to get the benefits much faster. However, time for testing is running out, and these findings strongly suggest UK organisations need to follow an IV&V route."
IV&V is demonstrating its greater reliability over traditional testing methods, accelerating the discovery of residual errors, and allowing organisations to move into "clean management" and "contingency planning" with more confidence - both for internal and external interests. By employing IV&V as an integral element in the Year 2000 testing programme, Logica believes organisations can significantly reduce the level of errors in their code. Logica is pioneering the use of Matridigm's MARC2000 COBOL IV&V in the UK.
Chris Harries, continues, "It is the use of products like MARC2000 from Matridigm, that will allow a much faster and cleaner 'fixing' of millennium code. I believe that this is a significant step which the UK can make in achieving millennium compliance." |
