BBK'S WELTEKE SAYS HE'S OPPOSED TO BUNDESBANK GOLD SALES Frankfurt--Jun 9--Bundesbank President-designate Ernst Welteke cautiously argued against gold sales by the German Bundesbank. He said the effect of gold sales on some of the countries that should benefit from it was unclear. JAPAN TOCOM APR GOLD HITS CONTRACT LOW DESPITE HEAVY BUY Tokyo--Jun 9--Tokyo Commodity Exchange Apr gold closed the morning session at a contract low of 997 yen per gram, the first tumble below 1,000 yen since its launch in 1982, dragged down by spot gold's drop below US $262 per ounce overnight and the US dlr/yen's sharp fall, dealers said. However, heavy bargain hunting below the key 1,000 yen per gram level continued to underpin TOCOM gold futures prices, they said. (Story .10268)
REPEATS:ECB TOTAL GOLD ASSETS DN 16 MLN EUROS ON TECH TRANSACTION Frankfurt--Jun 8--Total gold assets registered by the European Central Bank system were down 16 million euros at 105.307 billion euros in the week ending Jun 4, the ECB said today in its weekly financial statement. The decrease was caused by the unwinding of a technical transaction between two central banks that had taken place at the end of 1998 in connection with the subsequent transfer of foreign reserve assets to the ECB, it said.
