Micron Technology (MU: news, msgs) says PC manufacturers are ready to step up the memory capacity that chip companies like Micron provide. Kipp Bedard, vice president of corporate affairs, told fund managers Tuesday that basic memory of low end PC's will start at 64 megabytes, and high-end machines routinely will start to have 96 to 128 MB. This shift would represent the first wholesale change of memory standards in about two years. Bedard predicted that Micron and other memory chip makers would offer manufacturers pricing incentives to make it easier for PC makers to accommodate expanded memory. However, those comments drew a skeptical reaction from fund manager Leslie Fineberg of Investors Capital. PC companies face hard enough hurdles, Fineberg said, with consumers likely to hold off on purchases because of year 2000-technology concerns. So memory chip companies would have to cut their prices sharply, doing so at the risk of eating into their profit margins, Feinberg said. See full story.
