EarthLink Teams with E-Trade To Encourage Online Investing; Companies Join Forces in Offering Six Months of Free Internet Access to EarthLink Members Who Open an E-Trade Account

BusinessWire, Wednesday, June 09, 1999 at 08:26

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--EarthLink
(NASDAQ:ELNK) and E-Trade Group Inc. (NASDAQ:EGRP) today announced
they have joined forces to give EarthLink members an incentive to
start investing online.
Effective Wednesday, all EarthLink members who open an E-Trade
account are eligible for six months' free Internet access compliments
of both companies.
The partnership is a broad-based, one-year strategic agreement,
including an advertising arrangement covering both Web and print
media. The centerpiece of the partnership -- six-month free access --
is designed to complement the already-strong lure of online investing
with the value of free, reliable and award-winning Internet access.
Like all other EarthLink Premiere Partnerships, the agreement
with E-Trade is designed to benefit EarthLink, its partners and its
members. It will generate incremental revenue for EarthLink, give
E-Trade the opportunity to promote its services across a variety of
prominent EarthLink media properties, and allow EarthLink members to
take advantage of industry-leading online brokerage services.
"Through our partnership with E-Trade, EarthLink members can
enhance their personal presence on the Internet and empower themselves
with the wide range of financial information available through
E-Trade," said Howard Lefkowitz, vice president of business
development and Internet marketing for EarthLink.
"By offering six complimentary months of EarthLink access to
members who open a new E-Trade account, we're providing a compelling
reason for individuals to take advantage of the self-directed
investing opportunities made possible by E-Trade."
Investors have been flocking to the Internet, lured by low
trading commissions, a plethora of information available online and
the convenience of trading on their own terms. According to The Yankee
Group, the market for online investing will explode over the next five
years, growing from 5 million people in 1998 to 25 million people by
2003. The agreement between EarthLink and E-Trade will allow both
companies to take advantage of this surge.
"This partnership involves two, true category leaders who are
continually innovating and expanding both their services and their
customer bases," said Jerry Gramaglia, senior vice president of
marketing and sales for E-Trade. "Through the partnership with
EarthLink, E-Trade will enhance its exposure among a large group of
Internet-savvy consumers and further establish itself as a leading
financial services provider."
