Wi-LAN Wins National CATA Alliance Award of Distinction for Emerging Technology

CALGARY, ALBERTA--

Industry Award Recognizes Wi-LAN's Patented W-OFDM Technology

CATA Annual Conference - Wi-LAN Inc. was honoured for its
pioneering work in wireless technology at the Canadian Advanced
Technology Association (CATA) Awards ceremony the evening of
Tuesday June 8th in Calgary. Dr. Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN co-founder
and president, received the Emerging Technology Award of
Distinction on behalf of the company for the groundbreaking
development of its patented W-OFDM (Wide-band Orthogonal Division
Frequency Modulation) radio frequency technology that opens the
door to a wide range of wireless applications. The 1,000 member
CATA Alliance, which represents Canada's advanced technology
industry, created the Awards of Distinction in 1984 to raise the
profile of Canadian achievement in science and technology.

"Wi-LAN is thrilled to receive this award. After seven intensive
years of research and development of the W-OFDM technology, we are
now on the verge of launching a flagship 30 Mbps product that will
put Canada at the forefront of the new wireless age," said Dr.
Zaghloul. "The tireless work of our staff and superb research
team, along with the continued support of organizations like CATA
Alliance, as well as our shareholders, have helped make the
journey worthwhile.

Zaghloul says such recognition strengthens the company's
commitment of using wireless to put communications in the hands of
the individual anytime, anywhere. CATA Alliance's Emerging
Technology Award is focused on the launch of an innovative new
product. Entries from across Canada were judged in relation to the
degree of innovation incorporated in the product and its market
potential.

Commericalization of W-OFDM technology by Wi-LAN and by other
licensed manufacturers makes possible high-speed wireless
broadband products that will soon greatly extend the range of data
communication services. High speed Internet access, real-time
videoconferencing, remote access telemedicine and other such
services requiring large bandwidths are currently restricted to
areas served by high speed telecommunications lines.
