Ray: Can you or anyone translate what if any effect this has on IDC? Does this agreement include the Interdigital patents, etc.?
Another interesting article is on the business wire concerning Alcatel that I think is still in a partnership with IDC:
======================================================= The Alcatel Access Partnering Program Demonstrates Broadband Services to the Home
June 9, 1999
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- The Alcatel Access Partnering Program (AAPP) will be demonstrating solutions for delivering broadband services to the home, including video on demand over DSL, in Alcatel's booth No. 6713 at Supercomm '99 in Atlanta.
The AAPP announced its formation this May prior to N+I Interop, as a comprehensive program focused on demonstrating and delivering revenue-generating applications that service providers can deploy today in their local access networks.
AAPP member companies demonstrating their video on demand over DSL solutions include: nCUBE's MediaCUBE 30 Video Server, Stellar One Corporation's Netris(R) 3000 set-top box, and Motorola Inc.'s Streamaster(TM) Home Gateway set-top box -- all interoperating with Litespan(R), the New World Digital Loop Carrier(TM)(NWDLC(TM)).
"Our integration efforts in the Petaluma lab have resulted in the capabilities we are happy to demonstrate at Supercomm, such as VOD over the Litespan together with our AAPP members. We are also announcing a new member, IMAKE, which will provide a key element in the end-to-end system for creating video service revenues," said Patti Collins, Director of Business Development for the Wireline Access Division of Alcatel USA.
IMAKE offers billing and service management with their product e.merge(TM). "We are bringing new back office business support systems to the forefront to take advantage of the broadband networks that are being delivered by Alcatel," said Mark Schaszberger, President of IMAKE. "The e.merge product suite allows for next generation network technologies that are currently converging with voice, data and video capabilities to provide a system which enables a profitable return on investment."
According to Ray Burgess, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Imaging and Entertainment Solutions operation, "Alcatel's broadband service to the home initiative is a natural match for Streamaster architecture and Motorola's vision of the broadband living experience. Streamaster has been developed for the convergence of video, data and voice services into a single common platform."
"Our participation in the Alcatel Access Partnering Program allows nCUBE to provide Alcatel customers with a cost-conscious, economic set of broadband computing solutions," said Bill Beighe, Director of Channels at nCUBE. "Our leadership in world-wide MPEG video delivery allows us to leverage our experience and expertise to provide many options to Alcatel customers. "
"Stellar One's Netris 3000 platform provides the flexibility of offering video on demand and Internet browsing to the home," said Steve Voit, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Stellar One. "Later in June, Stellar One will unveil new capabilities that will allow DHTML programmers to easily create applications and customize the user interface for these broadband services to the home. The AAPP provides an excellent environment for the demonstration and delivery of these new services to customer with Litespan in their network," Voit stated.
Other applications Alcatel and the AAPP member companies are working on include:
-- High-speed Internet access -- Voice over DSL
-- Broadcast video over DSL
-- Broadcast video overlay o Video on demand over DSL
