Since no one else has responded - here's my take -

Until your shares are called, you own the shares with all the attendant risks and benefits - dividends, rights etc. Once the shares have been called, all these benefits accrue to the new owner.

An exercize is nothing more than a sale at a predetermined price, and the effect is the same as a straight sale.
