Good Morning Steve,
You understand the latency issue correctly. I am looking forward to seeing what is being introduced this week at SuperCOMM '99. Several vendors will be demoing terabit routers and it's going to be interesting to see who wins "Best of the Show". I'll keep you posted. Real players in this arena (oops, no stock picks, eh, Eric) included private companies like Monterey Networks, Juniper Networks, Avici and Nexabit. It's an exciting area right now and a lot of fun to see whose going to come up with the winning technology. Over the long haul, (3-4 years) we will start to see true photonic switching, with exobit data transfer rates highly likely. This will completely obviate the need for SONET/SDH and ATM. What will rule will be IP over DWDM, all glass. But, that's the future. Today we still live in an opto-electronic world, though a very fast one indeed.
Ciao, Ry |
