English, in terms of grammar, (verb conjugation, etc.) seems to be an easy language to learn....
However, when it comes to spelling... (mainly the way vowels are used), there seems to be no rhyme or reason for their [different] use; absolute hell...
I never learned to "spell", and when I was asked to "spell" a word.... I thought the person was insane, or mentally handicapped, soon I realized that I would have to improvise... and to this day I still do, luckily, I seem to do o.k. Except when I ask someone to spell a word, where "e" is involved, given that in Spanish, the English sound for an "e" is very close to the Spanish "i"... Therefore I tend to "mix" them up. Rarely do I ask someone to "spell it for me". I believe that due to my Latin language-based use of phonics has proven to be very helpful, same thing with Latin rooted words.
As examples of the confusing use of vowels: (say, the letter "A")
Apple, Agnostic, Alovera, Alliance, Alcoa, Galaxy, Granola.
Then....
Gates, "A", Gay, Gain, Age, Alien, and so on.... (you can do the same with "U", "E", "O" and I think even "I")...
I guess, changing the use of vowel "phonics" for an entire nation, would be very difficult... no ? Ooops... is it not? <g>
