<<A summary of Hyde's proposal, made available to The Associated Press, calls for prohibition of the sale or showing of ''explicit sexual or violent material which fails to qualify for First Amendment protection.''

The impact would be to restrict explicitly violent images, much as sexually explicit material is now prohibited for minors.

''The First Amendment is not absolute and does not protect obscenity,'' the summary states. ''Furthermore, it is constitutionally permissible to accord minors under 17 a more restricted right'' to pornography than adults have.>>

I also understand that this bill has provisions to restrict the interstate sale of alcohol....obstensibly to prevent minors from using their credit cards to purchase wine futures in classified first growths over the Internet. This portion of the bill is (remarkably enough) promoted by the alcohol wholesalers.....Orrin Hatch is shepherding it through the Senate.

Unfortunately, it may pass. On the video game portion...minors have few rights under the Constitution. The passage above is a relatively fair statement of the law. You would have a difficult time using constitutional arguments to abrogate such legislation.

Personally....I have doubts that such drastic measure would be enacted. But of course Germany and other EU countries have censored game content. BTW have you seen the demo for Kingpin? Talk about a poster child for Senator Lieberman.....it is shockingly graphic and violent.

Nice volume today...let's hope it lasts.
