Brad, I was as surprised as anyone that AI could not take credit card orders. I asked Cameron about this and he said the fax confirmations were "for the consumers protection." I got a slightly different answer from AI - they said it had something to do with their ability to make credit transactions (which led me to suspect that maybe AI has a credit problem with the major credit cards since the only other web business that does this - to my knowledge - is a sports site that isn't allowed to accept credit card orders because they executed bad orders in the past). I mentioned to Cameron that Digital River is setting up e-commerce systems for many sites and that he should check out their package - he said AI was looking at "several" options, but for now they would continue to use the fax system (to save $?) since it was "more secure."

I also have been told that inventory problems like the one AI had with my order are often the result of a distibutor not have good credit with the suppliers. I do not know why AIs leading distributor would give AI the cold shoulder for a webcam order, but it seems odd that they would have to rely on a secondary "most reliable source" jsut to fill a simple order for an "in stock" item. Cameron said AI was very busy, and that might have lead to the long lag time for me to hear about my order - however, Amazon gets back to customers in minutes, not weeks, and they are probably a bit busier.

From my three order attempts - you DO have to fax in your signature to AI in order for credit card orders (regardless of credit card type) to be processed (maybe this is only for the first order, but I don't plan on finding out). I gave the billing AND mailing address when I made my first order - but I still received an e-mail request to send in a second signed fax confirmation. there is a way to buy ESD software from Digital River by paying them directly, or by going directly to the softwares home site. I know you can order Doublecases through the BANY site, but i do not recall if AI's site mirrors BANY so that credit orders are placed directly to BANY. I did purchase my Doublecase without having to fax anyhting, but I did not use AI.

Anyway Brad, if this is the first you've heard of AI's shipping problems you SHOULD give them a call and find out more. You can reach Jay Furgeson by going through the main switchboard and getting routed to the "check on you order status" section - you will likely have to leave a message.

Good Luck,
The Weenie
