That is an excellent question. Technically, Red Hat doesn't really make that much $$$ off of selling Linux itself. It makes most of its cash off of support and consulting, as far as I know. Yet they do sell Red Hat Linux 6.0 on their web site for $79.95 now, so you've got to wonder if they don't make at least a pretty good living off of the "free" software alone.

Either way, if I was a dedicated Linux volunteer, I would want to "get mine" sooner or later. And if I wasn't, I wouldn't want to continue programming for free.
