The above are two methods that I have observed as common methods of quoting others used on this thread and elsewhere

In email the <> refers to the words of others. Italics or quotations are not unambiguous in meaning. The use of RE: in conjunction with quotes means unambiguously that the contents of the quotes that follow are in regard to the words of others.
