'Tank' has been used for quite some time to describe a large cell of a jail, in Britain it's 'clink' after a an old jail on Clink Street ...... 'to get tanked' as in drunk likely comes from 'tankard' ... 'tank' in general sounds like it came from the same latin root as did the spanish words estanque [pond], estancado [stagnant, bogged down], estancarse [to get stuck] ... if so it would fit with the idea of a stock selling off ..... but to answer your question, i dunno -g-
