Press: Milosevic's Ambassador Brother Is Key Channel To Russia
LONDON, Jun 8, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) Western negotiators are increasingly wary of the influence on the Kosovo peace talks of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's brother Borislav, the Yugoslav ambassador in Moscow, a British newspaper said Tuesday.
Describing Borislav Milosevic as a "suave diplomat" and former businessman in Moscow, The Guardian daily said he acted as "the key unofficial channel through which the Serbian high command reads the shifting mood of the Russians."
"Borislav is encouraging his brother to play with Russian anxieties about NATO's role in the Balkans," one British official was quoted as saying, by the paper's Moscow correspondent.
The article outlines a complicated chain of business interests which it says links the Milosevic family to Kosovo, particularly to the province's rich gold and bauxite mines in Trepca district.
The mines are partly owned by a company called Genex, identified in an April edition of the French daily Le Monde as being closely linked to Borislav Milosevic, said The Guardian.
It added that the company was listed as a sub-contractor by Swiss building contractors, Mabetex, which has been at the center of a huge corruption scandal in Moscow. ((c) 1999 Agence France Presse)
