Seagate may not have that many recent buyers to get hopping mad! At least not compared to the expected new customers from the 1.5 million copies to be sent out. As well as the free software that can be downloaded.

I also expect a fair amount of shelfware. But out of millions of copies they only need a small amount of hits to have an effect.

It definitely looks like an act of frustration. And it may be a big loss leader. But my concern is not for if Seagate will lose a lot (They certainly have a lot of experience of losing money to gain market share in disk drives), but how much this will effect Cognos's business.

If it is truly a $20,000 BI software product, Seagate's giving away for free. It has to persuade some potential Cognos customers to go with Seagate. It also may effect Cognos's pricing strategy.

My worry is the on Cognos's business not Seagate's.
