My primary reference works are a good star map (Wil Tirion's Sky Atlas 2000.0 - it'll be dead on in half a year!) and Burnham's Celestial Handbook in three almost-worn-out paperback volumes. They are a wonderful companion to the map. Chock full of observing hints and the history of astronomy and pages upon pages of the mythological significance of star names. It is from this set of works that I drew al Suhail. The Splendorous One. Gamma Velorum; it peers over our southern horizon just over the ridgeline at winter's end.
