Oh thank you for anticipating my Big Gripe. The only time I can countenance "impact" as a verb is for colons or molars - perhaps other medicalia.
I find that "affect" is a 100% useful drop-in replacement for the misappropriated verb, but I guess it doesn't have the same ... impact.

Esoterica - the verb for the noun "impact" is "to impinge". as in: A big-ass rock impinged on the Yucatan 65 million years ago.
