New York, June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Bluefly Inc., an Internet retailer of designer clothing at discount prices, said it will sell household accessories to offer customers more products and attract more online shoppers. New York-based Bluefly said it formed a unit to sell brand- name frames, crystal vases, towels, sheets and other items on its Web site at a discount of 25 percent to 75 percent. Its house and home department now offers about 600 products from 15 designers. Bluefly hopes to increase market share using its existing business model. The company already has increased traffic to its site by adding advertising and Web links through agreements with Excite Inc., Infoseek Corp., Lycos Inc. and other Internet search engines. ''It's a good opportunity to take what we've learned and apply it to a new arena,'' said Jonathan Freedman, director of investor relations. ''Home furnishings and apparel are both strong markets and feed off each other.'' Eventually, the company will add other home furnishing products to the site. It could possibly sell furniture in the future, Bluefly spokeswoman Margaret McCann said. Bluefly first sold shares to the public in May 1997 under the name Pivot Rules. The company, which previously sold golfing apparel, changed its name in October and became an Internet clothing retailer. Bluefly's shares rose 3/4 to 9 3/8. |
