Hi Wu, some points of clarification... Don't expect Mead to say when they will launch their DHA added baby formula. They want to surprise Ross (Abbott owned) who as yet aren't licensing the Martek product. GRAS is a form of FDA approval which is a simplified version over the FDA approvals for drugs which can take years. It is a closely guarded secret as to whether they may already have GRAS approval and are just waiting to launch the product. Martek knows (I don't) but are not allowed to say yes or no. This FDA approval is a seperate thing altogether from the FDA chartered panel (the FASEB panel) currently studying what the ingredients in baby formula shoud be. There was a panel begun over a year ago looking at ingredients for full term baby formula and this panel's report due out the end of Sept this year. Then another panel was chartered to look at ingredients for formula for pre term babies and it will be the one getting testimony from many souces in an open hearing this March 26 in DC (I plan to attend this meeting) So this is just some of the stuff going on which may influence when we can can expect US formula launches. From my viewpoint, what will trigger the progress we all hope for is public awareness of the effect of DHA ingestion by mothers, (before birth and during lactation) on baby learning/IQ/eyesight. Several trials have been/are ongoing which give evidence to the benefits, but Martek needs to get mass media exposure of it all. They are working this hard as we speak. Meanwhile your intended research on how capsule sales are going is of great interest to me. So keep us posted on results. If I can be of help let me know.
