Corel creates Linux Advisory Council
..."I expect (Corel's) purpose is to legitimately share ideas and become — if
not a governing body — then a tool to advance Linux," he said. "But the
question is, will the council serve to advance the operating system as a
whole, or only Corel's version of Linux?"

Corel spokesperson Stefania Allevato denies the company is looking to
further its own initiatives through the council. "The point is not to make us a
leader in Linux, but to get the open source community together in a panel
discussion to address a lot of outstanding issues."

Allevato admits Cowpland will discuss Corel's contributions to the Linux
community — but will keep that to a minimum. "The purpose of this is not to
push Corel's views," she said.

The idea for Corel's Linux Council was born after lengthy conversations
between Cowpland and Torvalds.
