Exodus Communications Plans Expansion in Asia, Europe

New York, June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Exodus Communications Inc., which runs Internet sites for other companies, plans to expand into Asia and Europe as it seeks to gain more international customers, said Chief Executive Ellen Hancock.

Exodus is looking at building data centers in Germany and Japan, said Hancock, who spoke at a PaineWebber Inc.'s Growth & Technology conference.

Santa Clara, California-based Exodus had found that customers are more willing to use its services if it has a data center near the customers headquarters, she said.

Exodus is benefiting from a boom in World wide Web sites offered by corporations and electronic commerce, as companies look to contract services instead of spending millions of dollars for their own customer data centers. The company runs Web sites for companies such as Yahoo! Inc., the no. 1 Internet service, and eBay Inc., the largest Web-based auction company.

''There's a six to one economic advantage to outsource than running it in-house,'' Hancock said.

Exodus wins the business in over 80 percent the contracts it bids, she said.

Separately, the company's $100 million acquisition of Cohesive Technology Solutions Inc. will be completed in August, she said.

Shares of Exodus rose 2 5/8 to 91 3/16.
