"DirectX 7.0 Shown to Developers" [6-10-99 3:25pm EST]
"Microsoft Corp. today annonced that it demonstrated the forthcoming DirectX 7.0 to developers at this week's Meltdown 99 conference in Seattle. The purpose of the event, which ran from June 7-9 and drew over 500 developers, was to inform developers of new features and ensure compatibility in the DirectX API (application programming interface). Microsoft also notes that the Meltdown event was co-sponsored by chip-maker nVidia.
Additions and improvements over DirectX 6.0 include better support for hardware-accelerated transformation and lighting with a 3-D accelerator card, which takes the load off the computer's processor; the enabling of visual effects, such as reflections on water and light passing through a stained-glass window; and improved audio algorithms for 3-D sound. DirectX 7.0 has also been optimized to run 20 percent faster than the current DirectX 6.1, which translates into better game performance.
DirectX 7.0 is expected to be released to the public in late Summer..."
