TO ALL ABOUT IDT RISC IN CISCO ROUTERS...........
THIS IS OLD BUT SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT NEC IN CISCO.
SANTA CLARA, CA, December 18, 1996 -- Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT), the broadest designer and manufacturer of MIPSr RISC microprocessors, announced today that Cisco Systems has chosen the IDT79RV4700T OrionT microprocessor to power both its 7200 and 7500 series of high-end multiprotocol routers. The R4700 Orion offers the ideal combination of 64-bit processing power and high bandwidth data movement capability to significantly boost Cisco's route processing performance at aggressive per-port prices.
"Cisco's most recent selection of the IDT R4700 Orion microprocessor demonstrates IDT's commitment and success serving the Internet infrastructure and building the Information Superhighway," said Dirk Smits, vice president of IDT's RISC Microprocessor Division. "We are proud that Cisco, the world's largest provider of internetworking solutions, has chosen another high-powered IDT Orion processor to deliver the high performance needed to transfer data over the Internet at the exceptional price level it needed to achieve."
IDT has been a long-time microprocessor supplier for Cisco Systems. In addition, the Orion family of microprocessors has quickly become a defacto standard for data communications and internetworking applications, including WebTVT by Sony and Philips Consumer Electronics, Hughes' DirecPCT, and Echostar's DISH NetworkT.
The Ideal Internetworking Solution
With 64-bit processing capability, the R4700 Orion provides more computational power and data movement bandwidth than standard 32-bit processors deliver to typical embedded systems. It enables execution of complex routing algorithms efficiently in software rather than using dedicated hardware resources. At 175MHz and 230 dhrystone mips, the R4700 offers a price/performance level that beats many industry-leading CPUs, including the Intel PentiumT.
"The IDT R4700 Orion at 150MHz enables the Cisco 7200 series to deliver the punch needed in regional office and distributed backbone environments at aggressive per-port prices." said Susan Scheer, product line manager in Cisco's Core Products Business Unit.
The high-performance R4700 enables unprecedented data movement capability, very fast algorithm execution speed and quick interrupt response times, crucial for high-speed Internet data switching and routing. In Cisco's 7200 and 7500 series routers, the R4700 leverages its powerful 64-bit MIPS processing engine with 700 megabyte per second bus bandwidth to manipulate packet headers and make routing decisions in record time. The R4700 powers the Cisco 7200 series' network processing engine 150, which can switch 140,000 packets per second.
Packaging, Pricing and Availability
The IDT79RV4700 microprocessor is available at 80, 100, 133, 150 and 175MHz in 179-pin metal quad flat package (MQUAD) with prices starting below $65 in 10,000-piece quantities.
IDT's World Class MIPS RISC Family
The R4700 Orion is part of IDT's high-performance RISC microprocessor family. IDT's product offering delivers a wide range of software-compatible price/performance choices based on the MIPS instruction set, including 32-bit RISControllersT and the complete family of Orion microprocessors. IDT has optimized the designs of its high-performance microprocessors for use in a range of embedded applications including internetworking, multimedia, data communications and telecommunications products. Superior price/performance, low power consumption and small form factor have made the MIPS RISC family of microprocessors the emerging standard for a number of digital consumer products, including WebTV, the Sony PlaystationT, Nintendo's Ultra-64T video game set and Echostar's digital broadcast satellite receiver. |
