To me it seems a fine thing, and no reason for disquiet, that there are now two SI language threads, especially as they serve different functions and different, if overlapping, constituencies. I wouldn't, myself, want to change the nature of this thread much; it's useful, it's interesting, it's fun for those who like this game, and its denizens are jolly playmates. The new thread is very nice, too, and its existence, for me, moots some of the concerns that have been expressed about this one. People can choose one milieu, or bounce from one to the other, according to their need and mood. I would assume that, in the spirit of collegiality, posts from that thread will be considered off limits for citing, or should I say, dissecting, on this thread; but I think that's been the assumption here without its having been made explicit. (I'm behind, not sure what I might have missed.)
So, even though I agree with Steven that Language Lab is more graceful and more succinct, I am weighing in for retaining the nature of the thread as is, complete with Gotchas, and the title of the thread as is, too, in deference to continuity; but not quite as is, because I would like the addition of the word Style; and, because we are perhaps the stuffier of the two threads-- or might, I should say, mistakenly appear to the uninitiated to be that-- I would also favor the addition of the words proposed by TLC, Free Beer. Free Beer defangs Lab. TLC and I know it's sophomoric; that's why we like it.
For me, it would be
SI Spelling, Grammar, Style and Free Beer Lab.
I am refraining, because I am a person of such gravitas, from proposing SI Spelling, Grammar, Style, Free Beer and Sex Lab. (Well, I admit I also suspect that jbe would refuse to be the Churlish S. Proprietress of a thread so vulgarly named.) |
