With switched-fabric technology, I2O becomes the point of convergence for building systems with unlimited I/O potential. I2O is a software architecture-complementary and somewhat independent of the underlying hardware, so it is portable and can be implemented on a variety of interconnect hardware. Only a small portion of the software-the transport layer-must be modified to permit the entire stack to be reused, be it bus or fabric.

To facilitate the convergence of I/O technologies, the I2O Special Interest Group (SIG) invited representatives from NGIO, Future I/O and PCI-X to discuss whether I2O complemented their particular technologies. The SIG determined that I2O complements all of these implementations and can greatly ease the transition to new hardware.
