Christopher, I like it: "Grammar, Spelling, and Style"

That requires dropping only the "SI" at the beginning, and the "Lab" at the end.

I am assuming that SI Admin will let us change the title of the thread; people change their monikers all the time, so why not threads? Too much of a change, however, and people will think we've gone out of business. Can't have that.

Now, re punctuation. Question marks, colons, semi-colons,exclamation points all go outside the quotation marks. The "authorities," ourselves included <g>, all agree on that. The only dispute has arisen over the proper placement of commas and periods. We have wuzzled over that issue innumerable times since the thread was launched.

And "wuzzled" is a better word than "debated," for most of us were of two minds about it. Certainly, as a professional writer,I knew that the style books all demand placement of commas and periods inside the quotation marks, so I obeyed this stricture when I writing for publication. But I have always found Fowler's argument for placing them outside much more convincing. So did most of the other people on this thread, as I recall.

So it is only when I found a source that was willing at least to acknowledge that the English system was more logical, that I finally capitulated to the inevitable -- and much more gracefully than Milosevich, I might add. <g> And please note the proper spelling of that gentleman's name. <sigh>

Here is the text of my statement of capitulation:
