IATV? ===================== MTV, AT&T in digital TV deal By Bloomberg News Special to CNET News.com June 11, 1999, 10:05 a.m. PT NEW YORK--Viacom's MTV Networks said AT&T, the largest U.S. cable-TV company, will air its MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, and other cable channels under a ten-year agreement that also includes the debut of new digital channels.
AT&T Broadband & Internet Services will distribute Viacom's new channel Noggin, a 24-hour educational network aimed at children, on its digital-TV service by the year's end. It also will offer MTV2 and Nickelodeon Games and Sports on a more advanced digital, interactive service.
Viacom, under chief executive Sumner Redstone, is seeking to attract more viewers by aligning itself with the biggest U.S. cable operator and preparing new channels for the introduction of digital TV, which will let cable and satellite companies offer hundreds of new channels, as well as interactive services such as email, through the television.
The companies declined to disclose financial terms of the agreement, which analysts said is longer than typical agreements between cable operators and program providers.
AT&T Broadband & Internet Services was formerly known as Tele-Communications Incorporated.
