Compaq Web Advisory: Compaq
Introduces New Alpha-Based Parallel
Servers Tuned for High-Performance
Technical Computing

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 1999--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news)
today announced two new AlphaServers with Tru64 UNIX that deliver supercomputer power in a stable,
mature architecture at a fraction of the cost of today's supercomputer systems. The new servers
complement Compaq's strategy of focusing Alpha Tru64 UNIX solutions on markets where high
performance and high availability are key.

Named the Compaq HPC160 and Compaq HPC320, the new parallel servers are based on the
industry-leading Compaq AlphaServer ES40 systems - quad-processor systems powered by new
generation 500 MHz Alpha 21264 processors with revolutionary new cross-bar switch architecture. The
ES40 is a balanced system for high-performance technical computing (HPTC) applications, matching
memory, I/O bandwidth and capacity to the 64-bit Alpha 21264 CPUs to give optimal scaling and
throughput for single CPU and SMP jobs.

The Compaq HPC160 combines four ES40 systems with Tru64 UNIX, for a total of 16 processors,
integrated into a single parallel server with a high-bandwidth, low-latency, Memory Channel II cross-bar
switch. The Compaq HPC320 combines eight ES40 systems with Tru64 UNIX, for a total of 32
processors, with one or two Memory Channel II cross-bar switches for maximum performance and
scalability for multi-job throughput or for large distributed memory parallel jobs. The servers are available
in July. Base U.S. list price for the HPTC160 is $391,000. Base U.S. list price for the HPTC320 is
$782,000.
