If I am confused, which could be as it was late, it is in the way I interpreted this from Fowler's:

In the type "Diana has better manners than I", 'than' is a conjunction, implying the ellipsis of 'have' after 'I'. By contrast, in the type "Diana has better manners than me", 'than' is a preposition followed by the objective form 'me'. THe second type is much less formal than the first.

To be clear, because it horrifies me to think that Christopher thought I would EVER say 'than me', even if it is correct, I thought this whole explanation was weird, but it did come from Fowler's, so I quoted it.
