Think for a minute what you have said and the long term concequences of it if true:
The internet is already "fulfilling its promise"

I, and many others I know, don't even LOOK at the annoying ads filling
little areas of my browser window

I just bring up Netscape w/ "my.yahoo" as the homepage

How do you think my.yahoo pays for itself? You know of course it pays for itself by advertising. If advertising fails yahoo! fails. How do you think AOL pays for itself? You think the $10/month they get covers all the content aggregation and creation they do?

If yahoo and all others like it fail what happens to the usage of the net? The net will nowhere near "fulfill its promise". You cannot simply avoid those things that rely on advertising, the whole net as we know it will come crashing down with it.
