It recently occurred to me that in an economy running on a gold standard, this extended curtailment of fresh supply would normally be quite deflationary. One begins to wonder how much the world actually covertly remains on the gold standard. Perhaps these mine closures are not healthy for either the miners or, more tellingly, the world economy at large.
