I agree with your view on Redhat's alliances but Redhat's profitability is unproved. Other Linux software vendors are on the same boat as well. VA Research is profitable but will face great competition when big box makers turn around and do Linux, which is not hard to switch their model.

I have no doubt that Linux will be a major player in the enterprise field in the coming years. I just don't know the future good enough to imagine that Redhat and other Linux Vendors can continue to make money over the long run when the code and binaries are free to download and/or distribute.

I got my Redhat Linux 6.0 from www.cheapbytes.com for 2 bucks. No docs or support, but I got it running immediately. As installation and driver suppoort gets better in the future, what will make people want to buy the full retail when you can get alternatives for much less?

Regardless, I am still interested in placing a bet on the IPO. Stay tuned.
